  • Currently ranked 10th overall, seventh in giant slalom and 20th in slalom World Cup standings.
  • Won silver (Alta Badia) and bronze (Soelden, Austria) World Cup medals in giant slalom.
  • Narrowly missed the podium in two other World Cup GS events with a fifth-place in Val d'Isere, France and sixth in Kranjska Gora.
  • Continued racing despite breaking his shoulder blade in early December while training in Switzerland.

  • One of the most dominant giant slalom racers of the last decade.
  • Finished second in 2000-01 World Cup giant slalom standings, but edged Austria's Hermann Maier to win the GS at the 2001 world championships.
  • Enjoyed a breakthrough season in 1995-96, winning five GS gold medals en route to the World Cup GS title.
  • Has finished top-three in the final World Cup GS standings every year since, winning the title in 1996-97 and 1998-99.
  • Earned the name "Michael Von-Win-Again" during his dominant string of victories in the mid-1990s. Has 19 career World Cup victories, all in GS.
  • Won bronze in giant slalom at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.
  • Finished 15th in slalom at 1994 Lillehammer Olympics; seventh in slalom and 13th in GS at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville.
  • Captured gold in giant slalom at the 1997 world championships, and bronze in GS and slalom at the 1996 world championships.
  • Made his World Cup debut in the 1988-89 season.
  • Helped along early in career as a skier by his older sister, Christine, who was a professional skier.
